Supervision

For the early-career therapist, the lay of the land is unfortunate.

Training, development, and education provided via practica, internships, and entry-level positions is often treated as secondary to the free or underpaid labor offered by the trainee. The agency benefitting from this arrangement is often financially stressed itself, bound to a system that prioritizes money over quality of care. This can lead to the promotion of clinicians who have endured long enough to be rewarded but do not necessarily have the training, skillset, or desire to become knowledgeable, willing, and invested clinical supervisors.

Due to these and others factors, the supervision many clinicians-in-training receive is primarily administrative, focused on compliance, or solely for the sake of “getting hours,” all at the expense of clinical and professional development.
